Your printer won't print from a Windows computer. Try these steps.

For: Windows computer and any printer brand

Last checked October 14, 2026 against official help from Microsoft. Written for Windows 11.

Printer trouble is common and usually simple. These steps work for HP, Canon, Epson, Brother and most other printers.

This page is for you if

  • You click Print and nothing comes out
  • It says the printer is offline
  • Pages are stuck waiting to print

Do these steps

  1. Step 1: Check the printer itself

Make sure it's on and has paper and ink or toner. Look for a jam or an open cover, and for any message on the printer's screen.

  2. Step 2: Restart the printer

Turn the printer off and unplug it. Wait 30 seconds. Plug it back in and turn it on.

  3. Step 3: Check the connection

With a cable, make sure the USB cable is firmly in both ends. On Wi-Fi, check the printer's wireless light. Many printers can print a wireless test page from their own menu.

  4. Step 4: Remove the printer

Click Start, Settings, Bluetooth & devices, then Printers & scanners. Click your printer, then Remove.

  5. Step 5: Add it back

On the same page, click Add device. Wait for your printer to show up, then click Add device next to it.

  6. Step 6: Get the latest driver

If it still won't print, get the newest software (the driver) from your printer maker's website. The links are below.

Good to know

  • Windows has a printer troubleshooter in the Get Help app that can find some problems for you.
  • Your printer's own help: HP, Canon, Epson, Brother. Only download printer software from the maker's own site.
