Your printer won't print from a Mac. Try these steps.

For: Mac computer and any printer brand

Last checked October 14, 2026 against official help from Apple. Written for macOS 27.

Printer trouble is common and usually simple. These steps work for HP, Canon, Epson, Brother and most other printers.

This page is for you if

  • You click Print and nothing comes out
  • The printer icon in the Dock says paused

Do these steps

  1. Step 1: Check the printer itself

Make sure it's on, plugged in and has paper and ink or toner. Look for a jam or a message on the printer's screen.

  2. Step 2: Check the connection

If it uses a cable, make sure it's in firmly. If it uses Wi-Fi, make sure the printer and the Mac are on the same Wi-Fi network.

  3. Step 3: Look at the print queue

When you print, a printer icon shows up in the Dock. Click it to see what's waiting. If printing is paused, click the button to resume.

  4. Step 4: Try a simple test

Open TextEdit, type a word and print it. If that works, the problem is in the other app.

  5. Step 5: Remove and add the printer

Click the Apple menu, choose System Settings, then Printers & Scanners. Remove your printer, then click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax and add it back.

  6. Step 6: Get the latest software

Check your printer maker's website for new Mac software. The links are below.

Good to know

  • Your printer's own help: HP, Canon, Epson, Brother. Only download printer software from the maker's own site.
