Forgetting the Apple password happens to everyone. Apple has a few ways to get you back in. Start with the easiest one.

This page is for you if

  • Your iPhone keeps asking for your Apple ID password
  • You can't sign in to iCloud or the App Store
  • You got a new phone and can't remember the password

Why this happens

Apple ID is now called Apple Account. It's the same email and password. Apple says the easiest way back in is with another Apple device you're already signed in on, or with your phone number.

Do these steps

  1. Step 1: Tap Forgot password

Where your iPhone, iPad or Mac asks for the password, look for Forgot password? and tap it. Follow the steps on screen.

  2. Step 2: Use your other Apple device

If you're still signed in on another iPhone, iPad or Mac, Apple may send you there to make a new password. Have it nearby.

  3. Step 3: Have your phone number ready

Apple may send a code to your phone number. Keep that phone with you.

  4. Step 4: No other Apple device?

Use Safari to go to iforgot.apple.com and follow the steps. Or borrow a family member's iPhone, open the Apple Support app, scroll to Support Tools, tap Reset Password, then tap Help Someone Else. Apple says your information isn't saved on their phone.

  5. Step 5: Be patient if Apple asks you to wait

If you can't prove it's you right away, Apple may start account recovery. Apple says this can take several days or more. It's slow on purpose to keep your account safe.

Good to know

  • If you'll have your other Apple device or phone number soon, Apple says to wait for it. That's the faster way back in.
  • Apple never asks for your password or a code over the phone. If someone calls saying they're from Apple, hang up.
