Turn on two-factor authentication for your Apple Account
Two-factor authentication adds a second lock. Your password is the first lock. A code on your own phone is the second.
This page is for you if
- You want to make your Apple Account harder to break into
- Your phone keeps suggesting extra security
Why this happens
With two-factor authentication, someone who steals your password still can't get in. They'd also need a 6-digit code that only shows up on your own devices.
Do these steps
-
Step 1: Open your account settings
Open Settings and tap your name at the top.
-
Step 2: Tap Sign-In & Security
Tap Sign-In & Security.
-
Step 3: Turn it on
Tap Turn On Two-Factor Authentication, then follow the steps on the screen.
-
Step 4: Add a trusted phone number
Type a phone number where you can get a code by text or call. Use your own number.
No iPhone or iPad?
-
Step 1: Use the website
Go to account.apple.com and sign in. Follow the steps to upgrade your account security.
Someone is asking for your code?
- Never read a sign-in code to anyone, even if they say they're from Apple or your bank. Hang up.
- If you already gave it out, reset your Apple Account password now.
Check it with the source
We wrote these steps from these official pages. If your screen looks different, the official page is always right.
