Last checked October 14, 2026 against official help from Google. Written for Google Photos app, October 2026.

Google Photos can save a copy of every picture you take to your Google Account. Then they're safe even if your phone isn't.

This page is for you if

  • You want your pictures saved if you lose your phone
  • Google Photos says Backup is off

Do these steps

  1. Step 1: Open Google Photos

Open the Google Photos app and sign in to your Google Account.

  2. Step 2: Tap your picture

At the top right, tap your profile picture or initial.

  3. Step 3: Open Backup settings

    Tap Photos settings, then Backup.

  4. Step 4: Turn on Backup

    Turn Backup on.

Good to know

  • Backup needs a good internet connection and can take a while the first time.
  • Your Google storage is shared by Google Photos, Gmail and Google Drive. If it's full, backup stops until you make room or buy more.
